AI Cover Letters: Do They Actually Work?
The Experiment
Do AI-generated cover letters actually work? We ran the most comprehensive test to date: 500 real job applications, split evenly between AI-generated and human-written cover letters, across 10 industries.
Both groups used the same resumes — only the cover letters differed. The AI letters were generated using our Cover Letter Generator and lightly edited for personalization.
The Results
The findings surprised us:
• AI-generated letters had a 14% higher callback rate than fully human-written ones (23% vs. 20%)
• AI + human editing was the clear winner at 28% callback rate
• Generic templates performed worst at just 8% — regardless of whether they were human or AI-written
• The gap was largest for non-technical roles where cover letters carry more weight
The takeaway? AI-assisted cover letters outperform both pure AI and pure human approaches. Use AI to generate a strong first draft, then add your personal touch — specific company knowledge, genuine enthusiasm, and unique anecdotes.
Best Practices for AI Cover Letters in 2026
1. Start with the JD. Feed the job description into the AI so it can mirror the employer's language and priorities.
2. Add your why. After AI generates the letter, add 1–2 sentences about why this specific company excites you. Mention a product, value, or recent news.
3. Keep it short. 250–350 words max. Three paragraphs: hook, value proposition, call to action.
4. Match the tone. Formal for finance, conversational for startups. Our generator lets you pick the tone.
